The federal government has directed the immediate release of 102,000 metric tonnes of rice and maize into the Nigerian Market.

This is just as government also proposed to embark on importation of whatever shortfalls that may be experienced in the flow of the food items.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made this known to newsmen on Thursday evening after the resumed  meeting of the Special Presidential Committee on Emergency Food Intervention  at the State House, Abuja.

According to him, the President has directed that “food will be made available, whatever it will take”.

The decision came after a three-day deliberation by the committee headed by the Chief of Staff to the President, Hon Femi Gbajabiamila, in reaction to the protests by Nigerians over high cost of food and other economic challenges.
