Johnel NG experienced a significant change in scenery when he relocated to Lagos, where he encountered the key influence for his upcoming single: ‘Wake Up, It’s Daylight’. In a series of posts on Instagram, the artiste teased the song, which will mark her first since this year.

“I moved to Lagos after campus a couple of summers ago, fell in love with R&B,” he wrote. The song artwork features a photo of the artist, born Nnamani Chimaobi John, standing on water in the middle of a paint-like remote area, backing the sunlight. Explaining the record’s tone, Johnel shared: “It’s deep but not sad … I’m not sad anymore.”

The announcement of new music, even if it’s just a teaser, is a positive development for the young artiste. Ahead of the song announcement, Johnel shared the first snippet for the single, ‘Wake Up, It’s Daylight’. It’s set to be released on the 26th of January via ONErpm, with the song being inspired by fictional events.

Born in Lagos, Johnel spent his early years moving between Lagos and Enugu State in Nigeria. He explains that growing up watching music videos by artists like Drake, Lil Wayne, and Wizkid influenced his decision to pursue his craft full-time. “I was captivated with the swag and how great I would feel while watching (them),” says Johnel, who began chasing his music career in 2020, while at high school in Lagos.
