Youth Organization, Group Assembly Initiative Acknowledges Authority of Judiciary

Group Assembly Initiative, a Civil Society Organisations committed to the rule of law, constitutionalism, and democratic accountability, have acknowledged the authority of the judiciary as the final arbiter in disputes across the country.

The group, in a statement issued in Abuja, reacted to a recent judgment delivered on 5 May 2026 by the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja in the case between the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) and officials of the Department of State Services (DSS).

It noted that the Court, presided over by Justice Yusuf Halilu, held that certain publications arising from a September 2024 incident involving allegations of an unlawful invasion of SERAP’s office were defamatory. “The Court consequently awarded damages and issued additional directives, including public apologies and post-judgment interest.

“We therefore reaffirm the importance of respecting court decisions, regardless of individual or institutional dissatisfaction, and of pursuing any legal remedies strictly through established appellate processes where necessary.

“We note with concern the public reaction from SERAP following the judgment, particularly its decision to issue further public communications rejecting the ruling rather than immediately pursuing appellate review.

“While we recognise the right of any party to express disagreement, we strongly believe that continued issuance of highly charged public statements at this stage risks escalating tensions and may inadvertently undermine public confidence in judicial processes.

“Furthermore, we are concerned that sustained media narratives around ongoing litigation, if not carefully managed, may be misinterpreted by the public and could place unnecessary strain on institutional trust, including perceptions regarding the independence of the judiciary and the professionalism of the security agencies involved.”

In this regard, the Civil Society Organisations including the Green Assembly Initiative and the Nigeria Youth Organisation collectively call for restraint from all parties involved. “The most appropriate and lawful path forward remains the appellate process, rather than sustained public commentary that could deepen divisions or inflame sensitivities in the national discourse.

“We reiterate that Nigeria’s democracy is strengthened not by public confrontation with judicial outcomes, but by adherence to due process, respect for the courts, and responsible civic engagement. Civil society remains committed to holding institutions accountable, but equally committed to ensuring that such engagement does not inadvertently weaken the democratic structures it seeks to protect.

“We therefore urge all parties to de-escalate public rhetoric, respect the ongoing judicial process, and allow the appellate courts to determine any further legal questions arising from this matter.

“Finally, we call on Nigerians to continue upholding the integrity of national institutions, promoting civic responsibility, and safeguarding the rule of law as the foundation of our democracy.”
