The Royal Academy of Engineering has announced Adedoyin A. Oje, a Nigerian engineer, as one of the 2022 winners of the Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation, the continent’s flagship award recognising scalable engineering solutions that deliver measurable development impact.

According to the Academy, Oje was selected for her Digital Infrastructure Governance Framework, a data-driven system that strengthens project accountability, enhances cost forecasting, and reduces construction delays in large-scale public-sector works. The judges described her entry as “a compelling model for the digital transformation of Africa’s infrastructure sector.”

“Winning the Africa Prize is a tremendous honour,” Oje said in a statement following the announcement. “My work focuses on applying engineering intelligence and analytics to make infrastructure delivery more efficient, transparent, and sustainable.”

The 2022 award ceremony, hosted in partnership with innovation networks across Africa, highlighted technologies addressing transportation, renewable energy, and environmental sustainability. Oje’s framework drew attention for its real-world deployment in infrastructure governance and its potential to inform future engineering standards across the region.

In his remarks at the award ceremony, Dr. Hayaatun Sillem CBE, Chief Executive Officer of the Royal Academy of Engineering, highlighted the importance of innovators like Oje in advancing Africa’s development agenda.

“The Africa Prize celebrates engineers who turn complex challenges into opportunities for sustainable growth. Oje’s work illustrates the strategic role that engineering innovation plays in strengthening governance and building resilient societies.”

Independent observers across the engineering industry have also lauded the recognition. Professor Adewale Fakorede, a construction technology expert based in Lagos, noted that Oje’s selection “signals global validation of the data-centric transformation happening within African infrastructure systems.”

The Africa Prize, established in 2014 by the Royal Academy of Engineering, supports innovators developing solutions with proven economic and social benefit. Past recipients include engineers from Kenya, South Africa, and Ghana whose inventions have achieved global adoption. Oje’s inclusion among the 2022 laureates marks the growing presence of Nigerian engineering talent on the international stage.
