The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has expressed concern over the recent developments in the Senate involving Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central Senatorial District.

In a statement on Tuesday, the forum emphasized the importance of maintaining decorum, fairness, and mutual respect in the Senate, stressing that all lawmakers should be accorded equal treatment in line with democratic values.

“As the nation’s highest law-making body, the Senate should reflect the principles of inclusivity, fairness, and respect for all its members,” said Professor Abubakar Jika Jiddere, NEF spokesperson. “It is crucial that all voices are heard and that legislative engagements are conducted in a manner that strengthens public confidence in the institution.”

The NEF called for constructive dialogue and peaceful resolution of any disagreements within the Senate, urging stakeholders to uphold the dignity of the legislative process. It also suggested an independent review of the matter to ensure transparency and fairness.

“The Senate plays a vital role in Nigeria’s democracy, and it is important that all issues are addressed in a way that promotes unity and respect,” Jiddere added.

The Senate leadership has yet to formally respond to the NEF’s statement, but the development has sparked broader discussions on the need for professionalism and inclusivity in governance.

As the situation unfolds, the NEF reiterated its commitment to promoting national harmony and encouraged all stakeholders to engage in respectful and solution-driven dialogue.
