Globacom Completes Security Hardening of Glo-1 Submarine Cable and Internet Gateway Infrastructure

Globacom Limited has announced the completion of a major security hardening initiative for its Glo-1 submarine cable system and associated international internet gateway infrastructure.
The Glo-1 cable spans 10,000 kilometres from Lagos to London and serves as a primary digital gateway connecting Nigeria and other West African nations to Europe. The initiative focused on strengthening the cable system’s resilience against large-scale network threats including DDoS attacks, BGP route hijacking, and unauthorized access to gateway infrastructure — risks the company identified as increasingly relevant given the volume of banking, enterprise, and ISP traffic carried over the backbone.
The work included enhanced network segmentation architecture securing traffic flow between the international gateway and core network, deployment of secure routing and traffic filtering policies to reduce BGP misconfiguration risks, and the implementation of traffic monitoring and anomaly detection controls to identify suspicious cross-border activity. Vulnerability assessments and penetration testing were conducted across critical infrastructure supporting the company’s enterprise and financial sector clients.
Globacom’s security, network, transmission, and operations teams worked jointly throughout the programme to ensure secure deployment and establish ongoing vulnerability management processes for gateway infrastructure going forward.
The Glo-1 system represents an investment of $600 million and remains one of the most significant pieces of digital infrastructure connecting West Africa to global internet capacity.
