The Kano State Ministry of Health has appealed to the people in the state to take the COVID-19 vaccine, saying the pandemic is still active in the state.
The Executive Secretary, Primary Healthcare Management Board (PHCMB), Dr Tijjani Hussein, made the call at a two-day orientation of the media on phase two of the COVID-19 vaccine held in Kano yesterday.
Hussein, who is the coordinator of the COVID-19 Technical Response Team in the state, said there were still 50 active cases of the pandemic in the state.
According to the coordinator, who was represented by the Director of Public Health, state Ministry of Health, Dr. Ashiru Rajab, the state has recorded 115 deaths from the pandemic as at September 21.
He added that as at the period under review, the state had recorded 4,000 confirmed cases since its outbreak in March last year, adding that over 3,900 had been treated and discharged.
Hussien urged the public to turn out en masse to take the COVID-19 vaccine as the pandemic is still active in the state, noting that “the mass taking of the vaccine would make Kano State achieve herd immunity.
“This herd immune means the majority of the people would be immune to contracting the virus and eventually it will be kicked out from the state.”
In his presentation on the outbreak of cholera, the twin infections bedeviling the state, the Disease Surveillance and Notification Officer of the ministry, Sulaiman Iliyasu Hamisu, revealed that the state has recorded no fewer than 11,475 cases of cholera since its outbreak on March 5, 2021.
He added that out of the figure, 392 patients died in the 44 local government areas of the state, representing 2.8 per cent.
For his part, the Minister of State for Education, Mr. Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, who graced the occasion, said misperception about education being just limited to the classroom was contributing to the lingering gaps.
In his remark, he said: “Education is not just a classroom thing; the entire gamut of the educational system consists of so many life skills that are inherently endowed in any society.
“However, the formal mode of teaching people to become literate in a communicable language, because literacy is not only as it pertains to English language.
“You can also have literacy in other languages; literacy refers to the ability to communicate in education in one language and to do so in written and oral forms.”
