Mercy Chinenye Chukwu, a Nigerian business analyst and finance professional, has continued to demonstrate how data-driven decision-making and strategic cost optimization are transforming manufacturing operations and business performance across Africa. Through her growing career in multinational consumer goods companies, she has contributed to improving operational efficiency, financial planning, and profitability by leveraging analytics, technology, and innovative financial management practices.

Speaking on what inspired her career path, Mercy stated that her passion for finance instigated the desire to see numbers beyond its rudimentary form but rather a tool to the creation of value for every organization.

“Every successful manufacturing company needs to have a sound data-driven financial information,” she further alluded. The productivity of every manufacturing company lies in its optimization and control of cost, measurement and ultimately removal of the waste in the long-run, with the potential to increase production and at the cheapest cost possible to the manufacturer.

Holding a degree in Accounting from Obafemi Awolowo University, Mercy has built a strong professional foundation supported by globally recognized certifications, including Financial Modeling and Valuation Analyst (FMVA), Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), as well as working towards getting the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) certification.

Presently, Mercy works at Nestlé Nigeria Plc as a Business Analyst. In her work, she collaborates with other teams to examine market trends, business performances, drive data-driven analytics reports and give useful advice and recommendations aimed at enhancing operations.

From her point of view, the future of manufacturing will be more and more associated with those companies that are able to unite their technologies, analytics, and finances into a certain decision-making approach.

“Competitive advantage in the field of manufacturing have moved from companies with just economics of scope to a cutting edge advantage that comes from leveraging data, identifying inefficiencies before they become costly, and building systems that support continuous improvement.”

Prior to assuming the position of Business Analyst, Mercy worked in different strategic finance positions at Nestlé Nigeria Plc – Costing Accountant, Costing Specialist, and Costing Analyst. During all these positions, she played an important role in budgeting, inventory management, manufacturing cost analysis, transfer pricing, variance reporting, and creating internal control system.

Some of her major accomplishments include handling the budget preparation process with 99% planning accuracy in addition to being involved in manufacturing activities where variance analysis helped achieve a 10% monthly reduction in production wastage through effective cost management techniques. She is also involved in enhancing the inventory management process through effective verification and analytical reporting techniques.

Throughout her career life, Mercy has shown a keen interest in using business intelligence tools like Microsoft Excel, Power BI, and ERP among others to make financial data easier to understand by business leaders.

Discussing the growing importance of analytics in today’s corporate environment, Mercy emphasized that finance professionals are increasingly expected to become strategic partners rather than traditional record keepers.

“Today’s finance professionals must be able to translate data into decisions,” she explained. “Our responsibility extends beyond reporting numbers—we help organizations anticipate risks, identify opportunities, and create strategies that improve business performance across every level of the organization.”

Beyond her corporate responsibilities, Mercy has demonstrated a commitment to professional development and community engagement through volunteer service. As a Rapporteur for the LeapAfrica Social Innovators Programme and Awards (SIPA), she contributed to documenting and communicating valuable learning experiences that supported knowledge sharing among emerging social innovators and young leaders.

Her dedication to continuous learning is equally reflected in her pursuit of advanced professional qualifications and her commitment to staying at the forefront of developments in financial analysis, business intelligence, and strategic management. She believes that investing in professional growth enables finance leaders to deliver greater value to organizations operating in increasingly complex and data-driven environments.

“Continuous learning is one of the greatest investments any professional can make,” Mercy added. “As industries evolve through technology and digital transformation, we must continually strengthen our skills so we can create solutions that are not only financially sound but also sustainable for the future.”
