In honor of late retired Air Vice Marshal Terry Okorodudu, a husband and father, the wife and only son, Mrs. Joan Okorodudu and Steven Okorodudu, have pledged that AVM Terry Okorodudu’s estate will continue to give back to society by helping young people gain access to quality education at all levels, with both male and female awardees from across the country, regardless of background, benefiting from the scholarship scheme.
Top amongst the beneficiaries are two Air Force children and two from Yonwuren College in Ugbuwangwe Warri, a daughter of Sergeant Oforodo and son of his personal orderly attached to AVM Okorodudu while in service, FD Bashir Abubakar, whose son is Abubarkar Hashimu Bashir, a recipient among several others.
On its part, Yonwuren Media/Foundation has paid glowing tribute to Air Vice Marshal Terry Omatsola Okorodudu (Rtd.), describing him as one of Nigeria’s most distinguished military officers whose life and career exemplify discipline, excellence, patriotism, visionary leadership, and unwavering commitment to national development.
The glowing tribute recounts the life journey of the respected airman. Born on August 27, 1955, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and proudly rooted in Itsekiri, Okpe, and Ijaw heritage, AVM Okorodudu’s remarkable journey reflects a lifetime of dedicated service to Nigeria and humanity.
From his formative years at Federal Government College, Sokoto, to his admission into the Nigerian Defence Academy in 1975 as an Air Force Potential Pilot, he consistently demonstrated exceptional determination, intellectual excellence, and leadership qualities.
Beginning his flight training at the Nigerian Air Force Primary Flying Wing in Kaduna in 1976, he steadily rose through the ranks, earning a reputation as a highly skilled aviator and dependable officer.
As an operational pilot on the Dornier 28-D-2 and G-222 aircraft, he successfully undertook critical national assignments with distinction, professionalism, and unwavering dedication.
His military career was marked not only by operational excellence but also by a deep commitment to strategic thinking and continuous learning.
A graduate of the Junior Staff College, Jaji, and the prestigious Naval War College in Rhode Island, United States, he further enhanced his credentials with a Master’s Degree in Strategic Studies from the University of Ibadan.
His intellectual brilliance earned international recognition during his studies at the Defense Institute of International Legal Studies in Newport, where he distinguished himself among military officers from nineteen countries, serving as both Class Leader and Chief of Staff during operational exercises.
“Leadership is measured not merely by the positions one occupies but by the impact one leaves behind,” a principle that AVM Okorodudu demonstrated throughout his illustrious career.
Over the years, he served in several strategic capacities, including Military Assistant to the Air Officer Commanding, Military Airlift Command; Operations Officer in the Presidential Air Fleet; Directing Staff at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji; senior leadership positions within the 97 Special Operations Group; Deputy Director of Plans at Nigerian Air Force Headquarters; and Deputy Director at both the Defence Intelligence Agency and Defence Headquarters.
His expertise and diplomatic acumen earned him appointment as Nigeria’s Defence Attaché to Moscow in 2006, with concurrent accreditation to Ukraine, Belarus, and Georgia, where he represented Nigeria with distinction and strengthened international military cooperation.
One of his most enduring contributions to national development remains his pioneering role in advancing Nigeria’s aerospace self-reliance.
Recognizing the importance of developing indigenous capacity in aircraft maintenance and engineering services, AVM Okorodudu conceptualized a framework that significantly reduced dependence on foreign contractors while conserving valuable national resources.
This vision led to the establishment of Aeronautical Engineering and Technical Services Limited (AETSL), a Federal Government-owned enterprise under the Ministry of Defence and the Nigerian Air Force.
As Chief Executive Officer, he successfully championed the development of local expertise in aeronautical maintenance, repair, and technical services.
Associates, colleagues, and admirers have described him as “a visionary leader whose foresight transformed ideas into institutions and whose service continues to shape the future of Nigeria’s Defence and aviation sectors.”
Beyond his professional accomplishments, he is widely respected for his intellectual depth, cultural appreciation, integrity, and commitment to family.
His interests in music, sports, astronomy, writing, and poetry reflect the multifaceted personality of a man whose influence extends far beyond the military sphere.
As Nigeria celebrates the life and achievements of Air Vice Marshal Terry Omatsola Okorodudu (Rtd.), his legacy remains a powerful testament to the values of service, sacrifice, innovation, and patriotism.
His contributions to the Nigerian Air Force, the Armed Forces, and the nation continue to inspire generations of leaders, military officers, and public servants.
