Beyond Artificial Intelligence: How Michael Dolapo Obawa Is Building Influence Through Technology and Leadership

Among them is Michael Dolapo Obawa, a Nigerian-born data scientist and software engineer whose career reflects the intersection of technical expertise, leadership, and social impact.

Currently based in Kent, United Kingdom, Obawa is pursuing a Master’s degree in Healthcare Leadership at BPP University. His academic foundation, however, began in Nigeria, where he studied Philosophy at University of Benin.

While philosophy and artificial intelligence may appear worlds apart, Obawa believes both disciplines share a common foundation in reasoning, ethics, and analytical thinking — qualities that would later shape his transition into software engineering and data science.

Following his university education, he underwent professional training at Aptech, earning an Advanced Diploma in Software Engineering and developing expertise in machine learning, statistical analysis, and scalable data systems.

Over time, his work expanded into predictive analytics and AI-driven research projects focused on healthcare systems, behavioral intelligence, and business optimization. His professional experience includes roles across globally recognized institutions and technology-driven environments.

At OpenAI, where he served as an Artificial Intelligence Research Fellow, Obawa worked on machine learning systems designed to analyze large datasets and generate predictive insights. He also completed a data science internship with Google, contributing to predictive analytics initiatives aimed at improving user engagement and digital product performance.

In addition, he worked with McKinsey & Company as a Market Intelligence Analyst, where he participated in healthcare technology research and forecasting projects supporting strategic business decisions.

Despite his growing profile in technology, Obawa says leadership and communication have remained central to his personal and professional development.

Alongside his technical career, he served as President of the National Association of Philosophy Students during his undergraduate years, a role that strengthened his leadership and organizational abilities. At BPP University, he also served as a Student Union Wellbeing Ambassador, supporting student engagement and welfare initiatives within the university community.

According to him, these experiences helped shape his ability to work collaboratively, manage responsibilities effectively, and navigate diverse environments.

“Technology is important, but leadership and human connection are equally essential. Working with people, understanding challenges, and creating solutions collectively has influenced the way I approach both life and innovation,” he said.

Industry experts say the emergence of professionals like Obawa reflects a broader shift taking place across Africa’s technology ecosystem — one where technical competence is increasingly being combined with leadership, communication, and multidisciplinary thinking.

In recent years, Nigeria has continued to gain recognition as one of Africa’s leading innovation hubs, producing startups, engineers, and researchers contributing to fields such as fintech, healthcare technology, enterprise systems, and artificial intelligence.

For many observers, the significance of Obawa’s story lies not only in his technical achievements but also in his ability to combine research, leadership, and social impact within a rapidly evolving global industry.

His work has earned several recognitions, including the Global Emerging Data Scientist Award from the International Data Science Council and the Young Innovator in Artificial Intelligence Award at the World Technology Summit. He was also named among the Top 100 Men in Technology by the Global Tech Leaders Forum.

Beyond awards and professional milestones, Obawa continues to advocate for greater African participation in emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence and data science. Fluent in English, Yoruba, and Nigerian Pidgin, he believes the continent’s growing youth population represents a major opportunity for global innovation.
