MEL REFLECTS ON HIS EARLY STRUGGLES, ARTISTIC GROWTH AND ASPIRATIONS IN NIGERIA’S RAP SCENE

Emerging Nigerian rapper, Courage Enueshike, better known as MEL, has opened up about the personal experiences, influences and challenges that shaped his journey into music, offering a candid look into the world behind his craft.
Recounting how his love for rap began, the artist said his passion dates back to childhood, even though the genre was frowned upon at home. “Growing up I always loved rap music, even though rap as a genre was censored in my household I always found a way to listen to it on my earpiece,” he said. Despite occasionally getting into trouble for rapping along, the young MEL knew he had found something deeper.

He explained that over time, listening alone was no longer enough. “After some years I realized listening wasn’t sufficient and I wanted more from music, so I decided to start writing rap, which then evolved to making my own beats and rapping on them because I couldn’t afford to pay producers,” he shared.
To MEL, music is more than entertainment — it is a release for emotions he struggles to express ordinarily. According to him, “my music carries messages, emotions or experiences that I’m unable to express in a conversation… I want to use my music to pull those strings in the hearts of my listeners.” He says his aim is to create a reminder that people share more similarities than they think.
Speaking on his artistic style, the rapper noted that hip-hop was not a major part of his early years, but global stars later shaped his sound. Young Thug, Meek Mill, Drake, Rick Ross, J. Cole, Lil Durk and Lil Baby stand out as his biggest influences — sounds that guided his evolution in rhythm, flow and delivery.

MEL also revealed that fans can expect new content soon. “I have a few covers coming up for the month and a capsule for January next year,” he announced, signalling a busy creative period ahead.
Reflecting on the people who helped refine his direction, he credited his brother and close friends for building his confidence in moments of doubt. “At a point I was confused about who I wanted to be as an artist… but they were here to keep me on track and remind me why I started,” he said.
Discussing his creative process, the rapper noted that inspiration can emerge from anything a song, a beat, a sample loop, a voice, or even complete silence. He described it as an unpredictable but deeply fulfilling workflow.

Outside the studio, MEL enjoys video games, photography, travelling and creating memorable experiences. Although he rarely has enough time for gaming, he said, “if I could I’d stream myself playing video games.” His love for visuals and exploration continues to influence his creativity and storytelling.
