House of Iveshead – “People of the South” Collection
By Akin faminu
Nigerian fashion designer and creative director of House of Iveshead, Beatrice Omere, has released her latest collection titled “People of the South.” As expected, the collection is bold and uplifting, with a colour palette that bursts with spicy and neon tones, all tempered by soft ivories and natural hues. There is also the designer’s familiar but always delightful use of print, colour, and texture. Beatrice is, after all, known for her perfectly executed print mashups.
At the heart of the collection is the somewhat marginalized plaid George fabric. Traditionally worn by people from the South Eastern part of Nigeria, it has been given a fresh new lease of life here. It’s no secret that millennials and Gen Zs aren’t too keen on conforming to the “old ways,” so Beatrice took the classic George wrapper and transformed it into pieces the younger generation would be proud to wear.
The collection features deconstructed George pieces across dresses, aprons, culottes, rompers, skirts, jackets, and even a grand coat. The looks are young and vibrant, with the George fabric contrasting beautifully against hessian, organdie, guipure lace, cotton madras, and a customized polyester crepe.
The three pieces that truly stood out were the blue organdie dress with sculptural ruffles , the form fitting light green dress with a draped and ruched bodice that accentuated the figure. Lastly, the tan kaftan style tassel dress with short sleeves. These dresses feel energetic on one hand and, on the other, like a call to arms for the inner feminist to claim her space, her voice and demand what is rightfully hers … .in conclusion totally empowering.
The accessories were equally charming: quirky, playful leather bucket bags; colourful floral coronets; and cowries worn as waist beads. The overall visual storytelling of the collection also clearly conveyed the inspiration and message behind the clothes. The way the models inhabited the pieces helped bring the designer’s narrative to life, allowing us to imagine and relive the stories Beatrice was shaping.
House of Iveshead’s “People of the South” collection delivers on creativity and authenticity. It’s a pleasure to see how confidently the brand continues to refine its craft.
