Ahead of SYLV!A‘s EP Release,Slyv!a recalls her Family’s impact

In an exclusive interview, the Nigerian-Norwegian singer-songwriter, born Sylvia Obiageli Ojiaku, shared how her father’s support and early musical education shaped her path in the industry.
SYLV!A, who was born in Bergen, Norway, and raised in a music-loving family, credits her father, kajet Ojiaku, with igniting her passion for music. “I was only eight years old when my dad formed a family band, ‘The Ojiaku 3+,'” she recalled with nostalgia. “He wrote the songs, my brothers played instruments, and I took on the lead singing role. Those early moments were magical and taught me the power of music.”
“However, after her father’s relocation to Nigeria in 2010, SYLV!A was forced to shift her focus towards academics. “When he moved, my parents insisted on prioritizing education,” she explained. “It was tough, but I always held onto my dream. Even while studying, I would write songs in secret.” Sylv!a continued in a very dropping a few tears.
Despite her parents’ reluctance, SYLV!A’s passion never wavered. Her determination to pursue music culminated in her decision to move back to Nigeria and focus on her dreams full-time. “I finished my degree in Economics and Administration, but music was calling me. I finally decided to follow my heart and booked a one-way ticket to Lagos,” she said.
SYLV!A’s launch into the music industry is marked by her upcoming EP, which features the lead single “2nyte.” “This song is a dedication to everyone who’s ever felt lost or unsure about their identity,” she shared..
She was asked further the reason for such a title and she said “It reflects my journey and the lessons I’ve learned along the way.”
As she prepares for the release of her EP, SYLV!A acknowledges her family’s sacrifices and support.
“My dad believed in my talent from the very beginning, and I am so grateful for that. Now, with this EP, I hope to make him proud,” she said, her eyes shining with hope.
With the anticipated release of her EP, SYLV!A is determined to carve out her niche in the music industry and inspire others through her art. “Music is a universal language, and I want to use it to connect with people on a deeper level,” she expressed.
