Onuigbo Commends President’s Assent to Climate Change Bill

The lawmaker representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency, Hon. Sam Onuigbo, has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for assenting to the Climate Change Bill, saying the president’s gesture was a strong statement of the country’s commitment towards meeting her climate change obligations and setting the country on the path to sustainable development.

“To achieve this, ambitious commitments followed up by actions are needed from governments,” Onuigbo, who was the Chairman, House Committee on Climate Change in the 8th Assembly, said.

“According to the CODE RED report by Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released in August, the world needs to make concerted efforts to keep global temperature rise to 1.5 before the end of the century to avoid a climate catastrophe,” he added.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, in a release on Thursday, November 18, 2021, stated that the President signed the Climate Change Bill into law.

“The Climate Change Act owes its origin to a bill sponsored by a member of the House of Representatives, Sam Onuigbo and provides for, among other things, the mainstreaming of climate change actions and the establishment of a National Council on Climate Change.

“It also paves the way for environmental and economic accounting and a push for a net zero emission deadline plan in the country,” Garba stated.
