Super Eagles’ central defender, Leon Balogun, contributed the assist that kept Rangers unbeaten run intact at eternal rival Celtic yesterday as the runaway Scottish league champions fought back to claim a one-all draw.

Although the duo of Nigerian star players, Balogun and Joe Aribo were second half substituted, they were part of the action as the Scottish Premiership kings, trailed the rivals following a goal in the 23rd minute.

Rangers conceded a goal following Norway international of Moroccan descent, Mohamed Elyounoussi, but the AFCON 2019 bronze medal winner with Nigeria, Balogun, helped Rangers level scores in the 38th minute in the derby.

Borna Barisic’s corner was met by Balogun at first, and then squeezed the ball at the back post, with Alfredo Morelos getting the ball over the line in the Old Firm fixture as the first-half ended one-goal apiece.

Although the game was a dead-rubber encounter for Steven Gerrard’s team, the result saw them extend their unbeaten league run to 34 matches.

The former Wigan, Brighton & Hove Albion and Mainz star was in action for 56 minutes before he was substituted for Nathan Patterson, while his compatriot Aribo played for 77 minutes before coming off for Scott Wright.

Celtic interim boss John Kennedy spoke in discontent concerning what was a dominant performance from his players.

Both Balogun and Aribo are expected to join the rest of the Super Eagles squad today as the three-time African champions tackle Benin Republic and Lesotho next week for a place in AFCON 2022 in Cameroon.
