The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), has commenced the distribution of relief materials to victims of insurgency and other violent crimes in parts of the country as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility.
So far, relief materials have been distributed to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Abuja, Suleija and Lagos.
Commencing the distribution at the IDP camp in Durumi, Abuja, the Director General Dr. Dakuku Peterside called on other well-meaning Nigerians and corporate organisations to continue to support the IDPs, noting that the displaced persons must be made to have a sense of belonging even in their most challenging times.
Represented by the Director of Special Duties in the Agency, Hajia Lami Tumaka, the DG acknowledged efforts of the Nigerian government, organisations, individuals and international donor partners for being supportive to victims of insurgency.
He said that as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility approved by the Governing Board, NIMASA would in the following days distribute relief materials to some IDP camps in 11 states in the country.
According to Peterside, “We are distributing relief materials to some IDP camps in 11 states in the federation to persons affected by insurgency and violent crimes in order to ameliorate their sufferingsâ€.
The NIMASA DG expressed confidence in the ability of the Nigerian security agencies to restore peace to the troubled areas and resettle the IDPs in their communities.
The team was also in Suleja, Niger  State where relief materials were distributed to IDPs, many of whom fled from the North East in the heat of the insurgency.
In Lagos, the NIMASA team led by the Head of the Financial Services Department, Mrs. Olamide Odusanya was received by officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) at their office in Ikeja.
The Director of Operations, Mr. Femi Giwa thanked the management of NIMASA for its show of solidarity in alleviating the suffering of IDPs in the state, assuring that Lagos was committed to the well being of Lagosians and was prepared to partner NIMASA to advance this course.
Materials distributed at the camps included mattresses, mats, diapers, toiletries and food items like rice, garri, flour, noodles, baby food and  maize amongst others.
The remaining states to be visited by NIMASA include Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Benue and Rivers. Others are Cross River, Edo and Bayelsa states.
