Senate Replies IG, Says He’s Clutching at Straws

The Senate has described the excuse given by the Inspector General of Police (IG), Mr. Ibrahim Idris, for shunning its summons as merely clutching at straws.

Idris had refused to honour three consecutive summons from the upper legislative chamber, on grounds that he was being invited over the maltreatment of Senator Dino Melaye in the hands of the police.

His conduct led the Senate to declare him an enemy of democracy, a development which he dismissed as blackmail.

The Senate, in a statement issued Thursday, however said the matter of Melaye has been overtaken by events, and that Idris is expected to brief it on the spate of killings across the country.
