Another attempted suicide attack on University of Maiduguri was yesterday foiled by security operatives on guard at the institution.

The two suicide bombers were lost in the incident, according to the Police. It is the ninth attack on the institution of higher learning in a bid to shut it down by insurgents.

The University has come under threat recently as the insurgents have frequently blown up themselves both within the institution and it’s vicinity.

This made the Borno State Governor, Alhaji Kashim Shettima to release the sum of N50 million for the dredging of trenches around  the school and equally to pay security allowances.

In a press statement on Friday, the spokesman of the Borno Police Command, Victor Isuku said: “Yesterday 6/7/2017, at about 2150hrs,  two male suicide bombers were sighted and intercepted along the parapet behind the University of Maiduguri  by joint security operatives deployed to the University.

“One of the suicide bomber was shot dead,  while the second bomber hurriedly detonated IED strapped to his body, killing himself, to avoid being captured alive.”

He added that: “It will  interest you to know that, the command recently deployed a full unit of Police Mobile Force (PMF) personnel, as well as guard and sniffer police dogs to the University, to compliment the presence of security personnel there.

“These deployments have started yielding the desired results, amongst which are, to prevent and nip in the bud any attempt by these enemies of peace who threaten the lives and safety of the University of Maiduguri community and its environs.”

He said immediately after the incident, “Police EOD team were drafted to sanitize the scene and its environ, and normalcy has since been restored.”
