Lufthansa has fitted new LED lighting technology on its A350-900 aircraft, which it says will offer passengers 24 lighting scenarios in order to provide “the right type of light at the right time”.
The carrier’s new Airbus aircraft started commercial service on its route between Munich and Delhi from February 10, and Lufthansa says it will be “the first airline worldwide to use a range of different settings for the on-board lighting of the A350-900 which are designed to fit with the day and night-time biorhythms of their passengers.
The new lighting will also be used “to emulate a pleasant restaurant atmosphere on board during mealtimes”.
Commenting on the technology Dr Reinhold Huber, responsible for “further development in the area of Customer Experience” said:
“The well-being of our passengers is of particular importance to us. So it represents a real milestone for us that we can now achieve these improvements with this innovative lighting technology.” Lufthansa says it also plans to refit its Boeing B747-800 aircraft with the new lighting system.
According to the carrier “Warm light for relaxation is supplied during periods of rest, whereas cooler light provides stimulation for more active phases”. The lighting moods have been developed in collaboration with lighting designers from Kardorff Ingenieure in Berlin, and are “based on findings from research in the field of Chronobiology and on known effects of our day and night-time biorhythms”.
The first ten A350-900s delivered to Lufthansa will be based at Munich, and will offer a total of 293 seats – 48 in business class, 21 in premium economy, and 224 in economy.
