A policeman attached to the Inspector General of Police (IG) Special Intelligence Response Team (SIRT), one Sergeant Felix Igbasan, was monday gunned down in the line of duty.

The gallant police officer, who is known for his feat at the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) in Lagos before his transfer to the SIRT in Abuja, was gunned down by an eight-man armed robbery gang.

Although he didn’t die at the spot, Igbasan was rushed to Maitama General Hospital, Abuja, where he was placed under admission given that he had sustained grievous bullet wounds on his left leg.

However, early at about 4a.m. monday, he gave up the ghost, throwing his team members and the leader of the squad into mourning.

It was gathered that the deceased, alongside other members of the team, had engaged the armed robbers in a fierce gun battle.

The gang, led by one Gabriel Alfa, were said to have robbed a senior immigration officer in Abuja, although they were later arrested and four AK47 rifles recovered.

According to the team, the contributions of Igbasan in the operation and several high risk operations in Lagos at SARS and IRT in Abuja, are too numerous to mention.

Already, his family has decided to bury him on November 24, 2016 in his village in Okitipupa, Ondo State.

In another post by the Officer-in-Charge of the SIRT unit, Abba Kyari, he said it was a very sad day for the Intelligence Response Team (IRT).

He said: “Very sad day for IRT. We lost one of the bravest and most reliable personnel of the IG Intelligence Response Team (IRT).

“Sergeant Felix Igbasan who died by 4a.m. after he sustained multiple bullet wounds during fierce gun battle with deadly armed robbers in Abuja.

“Though we arrested eight of the armed robbers and recovered four AK47 rifles, we lost one of our best. May his soul rest in peace, Amen.”
