Nigerian Agritech Firm Farma Introduces AI-Powered Tools to Improve Farming Practices
A Nigerian agritech company, Farma Software Limited, is developing digital solutions aimed at helping farmers access agricultural information, manage farm operations and address some of the challenges associated with crop production.
Established by Vantage Nigeria, the technology company has introduced Farma, a mobile application that combines artificial intelligence, crop calculators and agricultural learning resources to support farmers and agribusiness operators.
The application features Ask Farma, an AI-powered assistant that allows users to ask questions about farming practices, crop production and other agricultural issues. It also includes Crop Doctor, a tool that enables farmers to upload pictures of affected plants for preliminary identification of possible diseases, pests and other crop health problems.
Farma also provides crop-specific calculators covering maize, cassava, oil palm, cashew, plantain, cocoa, tomatoes, habanero and chilli pepper. These tools are designed to help farmers estimate production requirements and make informed decisions about their farming activities. Some of the application’s key features are accessible offline, making them useful in locations with limited internet connectivity.
The development of the platform draws on the agricultural experience of Vantage Nigeria, an agricultural consultancy and farm management company based in Abeokuta, Ogun State. The company operates in areas including farmland acquisition, farm establishment, agricultural advisory and farm management.
Seun Olaborede, Founder and Managing Director of Vantage Nigeria, is behind the initiative. His experience in agronomy and agricultural business has informed the development of the application, particularly its focus on providing practical tools that address everyday farming needs.
The introduction of Farma comes at a time when technology adoption is becoming increasingly relevant to Nigeria’s agricultural sector. Farmers continue to contend with challenges ranging from crop diseases and limited technical support to access to reliable production information.
By combining AI-powered agricultural assistance with practical farming tools, the company is seeking to make technical information more accessible to farmers, including those who may not have regular access to agricultural consultants.
While the application provides digital support for identifying crop problems and accessing farming information, professional agronomic assessment remains necessary for complex cases requiring further investigation.
The platform’s development also reflects the growing involvement of Nigerian technology companies in addressing challenges across the agricultural value chain, particularly through solutions tailored to local farming conditions.
As Farma expands its capabilities, its adoption and effectiveness among farmers will be important in determining the extent to which the technology can contribute to improved farm management and agricultural productivity.
