Louis Edem Ekpenyong builds Youth Future Through Basketball, education, and scholarships

Former Nigerian professional basketball player Louis Edem Ekpenyong is leveraging sports, education, and mentorship to give young people across Africa a pathway to success on and off the court.

Through the Louis Edem Foundation, the ex-D’Tiger player has built a platform focused on talent development, leadership training, and academic support for the next generation of athletes.

Louis Edem Ekpenyong said in a statement that at the heart of the initiative is the West Africa Basketball Championship, an annual international tournament that brings together elite clubs and players from across the region.

“What started as a grassroots idea has grown into one of the region’s key basketball events.

The championship now serves as a scouting ground for coaches, agents, and scouts while giving young athletes the chance to compete at a high level and gain exposure.

“The tournament is not just about winning games. It’s about creating visibility for African talent and showing that our players can compete with anyone,” Ekpenyong said.

It was stated that beyond the competition, the foundation runs annual basketball camps that combine elite coaching with leadership training, character development, and mentorship.

Ekpenyong revealed that the goal is to produce well-rounded individuals, not just good players.

“Sporting success must go hand in hand with education and personal growth.

“We want these young people to understand discipline, teamwork, and responsibility,” he noted.

To reinforce that, the Louis Edem Foundation also offers academic scholarships to outstanding participants. The scholarships help talented athletes access quality education while pursuing their basketball dreams.

For Ekpenyong, basketball has always been more than a game. After a notable career with D’Tiger and in professional leagues, he transitioned into youth development, using his experience and network to open doors for others.

Through tournaments, camps, mentorship programs, and scholarships, the foundation is positioning basketball as a tool for social transformation and youth empowerment across Africa.

For many participants, the programs offer more than court time. They provide mentorship, educational support, and a structure to build careers — in sports and beyond.

“Today, my legacy is not just about the games I played.

“It’s about the lives we are able to impact and the opportunities we are creating,” Ekpenyong said.

With the West Africa Basketball Championship growing each year and more young athletes benefiting from its camps and scholarships, the former national team star says the work is just beginning.
