Black Camera: An International Film Journal, one of the world’s leading peer-reviewed publications on Black cinema and visual culture, has appointed acclaimed Nigerian filmmaker and media scholar Femi Odugbemi to its Editorial Advisory Board.

The appointment, announced by the journal’s Editor-in-Chief, Professor Akin Adeṣọkan, underscores Black Camera’s commitment to broadening its global intellectual reach by bringing together leading voices in filmmaking, scholarship and cultural criticism.

According to Adekan, Odugbemi’s extensive contributions to filmmaking, media scholarship, and international engagement in cinema make him a valuable addition to the board. He also cited Odugbemi’s role as co-founder of the iREP International Documentary Film Festival and his work across film production, media policy, education and cultural advocacy as strengthening the journal’s mission.

Published with the support of The Media School at Indiana University Bloomington, Black Camera is internationally recognised as one of the foremost academic journals dedicated to the study, documentation and critical analysis of Black cinema and visual culture. The journal publishes research articles, interviews, archival materials, reviews and critical essays exploring Black filmmaking across Africa and the global diaspora.

Accepting the appointment, Odugbemi described it as an honour.

“I am deeply honoured by this appointment and grateful for the opportunity to contribute to Black Camera’s longstanding commitment to documenting and advancing critical scholarship on Black cinematic experiences across the world. I look forward to supporting the journal’s continued growth, intellectual engagement and global reach.”

His appointment reflects the journal’s continued efforts to deepen engagement with African cinema and scholarship by drawing on practitioners whose work spans filmmaking, policy, education and industry development.

Odugbemi will join an internationally respected Editorial Advisory Board comprising scholars, filmmakers and critics from Africa, Europe, the Caribbean and North America. His name will appear on the journal’s masthead beginning with its Fall 2026 edition (Volume 18, Number 1).
