Nigerian ‘Owambe’ Gain Ground as Diaspora Events Expand Globally

By Salami Adeyinka

Nigeria’s traditional “owambe” parties are increasingly being held outside the country, reflecting changing patterns in diaspora celebrations.

Events that were once community-based gatherings are now organised in cities such as London, Houston, and Toronto. It often involves larger venues and more formal planning. Birthdays and weddings among Nigerians abroad frequently incorporate elements of local culture alongside international event standards.

This shift has expanded the role of event hosts, or Masters of Ceremonies (MCs), who now manage diverse audiences and coordinate programmes flow across different cultural expectations.

A Nigerian event host, Abiodun Olawole also known as Samcrophone, said hosting such events requires managing audiences from varied backgrounds and maintaining engagement throughout.

Industry observers also highlighted increased coordination across vendors, including planners, DJs, and live performers, with bookings sometimes arranged months in advance to accommodate travel and scheduling.

This trend points to a growing structure in event planning tied to Nigerian social celebrations abroad, particularly within diaspora communities.
