Northern Lions, Middle-belt Tigers Open Nigeria Super League Campaign with Wins

The Nigeria Cricket Federation  Super League burst into life with an action-packed opening day at the TBS Cricket Oval, Lagos, as Northern Lions and Middle-Belt Tigers secured victories in their respective fixtures to kickstart the inaugural competition in style.

The opening match of the tournament saw Northern Lions produce a disciplined all-round performance to defeat Southern Sharks by four wickets.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Southern Sharks struggled to gain momentum against a sharp Northern Lions bowling attack. Reigneth Osagie made an immediate impact with early breakthroughs that reduced the Sharks to 6/2 inside the first over.

Danladi Isaac attempted to steady the innings with a patient 26 off 33 deliveries, while Akhigbe Miracle added 22 runs in the middle order. However, regular wickets prevented Southern Sharks from building meaningful partnerships as they were eventually bowled out for 89 in 20 overs.

Northern Lions Captain Okpe Sylvester led from the front with a superb spell of 3 wickets for just 9 runs, while Reigneth Osagie and Beki Mubarak Kehinde provided strong support with three and two wickets respectively.

In response, Northern Lions paced their chase effectively with wicketkeeper-batsman Hosanna Omokhobhio top-scoring with a composed 30 off 24 balls, including three boundaries and a six. Captain Okpe Sylvester also contributed a valuable 20 off 15 deliveries to keep the chase under control.

Southern Sharks fought back through Danladi Isaac and Isesele Odion Evangel, who claimed three wickets each, but the total proved insufficient as Northern Lions reached 92/6 in 15.4 overs to seal the first victory in Nigeria Super League history.

The second fixture of the day produced another entertaining encounter as Middle-Belt Tigers defeated Western Dolphins by four wickets in a closely fought battle.

Western Dolphins, after choosing to bat first, posted a competitive total of 129/6 from their 20 overs. David Abiebhode provided early fireworks with a quick 31 off 17 balls, while Ajekun Daniel anchored the innings with a composed 31 from 32 deliveries. Animashaun Muheez also contributed 25 runs to help stabilize the innings.

Middle-Belt Tigers responded with disciplined bowling led by captain Runsewe Sulaimon, who returned figures of 2 wickets for 17 runs in four overs. Abolarin Abdulrasheed Ayomide, Ndubudem 16, Eghosa Aghedo Destiny, and Ogunnaike Folajuwon each picked up a wicket to restrict the Dolphins from accelerating further.

In the chase, Solomon Chilemanya produced a confident unbeaten knock of 33 off 30 balls, striking two fours and two sixes to guide the Tigers towards victory. Captain Runsewe Sulaimon also remained calm at the crease as the Tigers maintained control despite an early setback.

Western Dolphins managed to pick up wickets at intervals through Destiny Chilemanya, but Middle-Belt Tigers successfully chased down the target in 18.5 overs to secure another four-wicket victory and round off an exciting opening day of the Nigeria Super League.
