The Caucus of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the House of Representatives, has called for the removal and prosecution of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, over alleged partiality and inconsistencies.

It warned that his continued stay in office posed a threat to the credibility of the 2027 general election.

The lawmakers made their position known yesterday while briefing the press on the outcome of their inaugural meeting that held on Sunday, April 12, 2026, where they reviewed the country’s political climate and raised serious concerns about the neutrality of the electoral umpire.

The caucus further questioned Amupitan’s ability to conduct free, fair, and credible elections, citing what it described as recent statements and actions that appeared partisan, compromising, and conflicted.

Central to their allegation was a controversial social media account on X, which the INEC chairman was accused of running.

According to the caucus, the account allegedly contained posts expressing support for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), as well as claims of Christian genocide in Nigeria.

Although INEC has denied that the account belonged to Amupitan, the ADC lawmakers insisted that digital forensic analysis and independent investigations suggested otherwise.

They claimed that the account was linked to a phone number registered in his name, raising questions about his transparency, integrity, and suitability for such a sensitive national role.

Based on these concerns, the caucus formally demanded his removal from office and called for his prosecution to prevent what it described as a looming slide into undemocratic practices.

The lawmakers also accused INEC, under his leadership of taking actions capable of excluding the ADC from participating in upcoming elections.
