Doorcas Africa Leverages Mobile Tech and AI to Curb Livestock Deaths in Rural Nigeria

Amid growing threats to food security and livestock productivity in Nigeria, indigenous agri-tech startup, Doorcas Africa, is emerging as a vital solution in the battle against preventable animal deaths in rural communities. The innovative platform, developed by a team of young Nigerian scientists and entrepreneurs, is transforming how farmers detect and respond to livestock health challenges.

Using mobile technology and artificial intelligence, Doorcas Africa provides rural farmers with real-time access to veterinary support, including vaccination reminders, symptom reporting, and expert advice through both a web application and WhatsApp integration.

“We noticed many farmers were treating animals blindly or too late,” says Odole, one of the startup’s co-founders. “We designed Doorcas Africa to help them act earlier and smarter, using technology they already have.”

By leveraging its network of vet ambassadors and crowdsourced reports of animal symptoms, the platform is helping to track and prevent outbreaks before they spread—creating an early-warning system powered by rural users themselves.

The startup’s innovation has earned international recognition, with support and training from the START Accelerator (Switzerland), the Etrack Programme at the Graduate Business School, University of Cape Town, and the World Health Innovation Fellowship (India).

With its scalable, locally adapted model, Doorcas Africa is not only preventing losses at the farm level but is also contributing to national efforts to build a resilient, tech-driven agricultural sector.
