Ofubu Kennedy Speaks on Calm Down Inc, his success, foray into new Ventures.
Nigerian international fashion designer, Ofubu Kennedy has opened up on what happened to his fashion brand Calm Down Inc and a new business venture that seems to be taking his attention away from Fashion.
Q: Tell us What happened to CALM DOWN, INC?
I anticipated this question, so let me take you through the journey from the beginning. In early 2020, I borrowed my initial capital. By June of that same year, I launched my first project—a shirt design that, interestingly, only took me about five minutes to complete. When we started sales, I noticed many of our transactions were happening through cryptocurrency, which sparked my interest in the space. I thought, “Why not integrate crypto as a payment method?” My team agreed, and that decision turned out to be transformative.
About 80% of our sales were made via Bitcoin and USDT, with the rest coming through bank transfers, which we primarily used for the company’s operational needs. Looking back, it felt like I was unknowingly reinvesting our earnings into Bitcoin as the crypto space continued to grow. At the time, Bitcoin was trading around $9,000, and despite the inherent risks, it closed the year at $29,000—over a 200% increase. That success gave me the confidence to double down on crypto.
However, this shift led me to step away from designing for my brand. I felt my future was in cryptocurrency trading and investing, which became my primary focus. That said, I didn’t completely leave the creative space—I was privately contracted from 2022 – 2024 to design for a Nigerian brand, as well as still pushing my own brand.
The journey hasn’t been without challenges. I’ve lost wallets, faced setbacks, and made mistakes, but I’ve also gained valuable experience and substantial growth over the years. I firmly believe in the potential of the crypto space—it’s about being smart, avoiding greed, and knowing when to take profits. While I won’t share specific figures, I can say this: embracing crypto has been one of the most rewarding decisions I’ve ever made, and I don’t regret a thing.
Q: What next for 2025? Or still crypto?
I don’t think I’ll ever stop trading, but I’ve reached a point where I can now balance it with other pursuits. Back then, it demanded my full attention—I couldn’t split my focus that much.
Q: So does that mean your brand is coming back?
The team and I had that conversation, and I was completely honest with them—I don’t think we’ll be making a comeback anytime soon. That said, I’m venturing into farming this year, and the process is already underway. It’s going really well, and I’ll make an official announcement when the timing feels right. It’s big, it’s exciting, and I’m genuinely thrilled about it.
As for INC, it will return at some point, but I have different plans for the brand moving forward. Till then!
