Premiered June 8, 2024 Nollywood fans are in for a hearty dose of romance and laughter as Local Man, a fresh romantic comedy starring Benita Onyiuke, Mike Ezuronye, and Nancy Desmond, makes its debut. The film delivers an irresistible mix of cultural charm, laugh-out-loud moments, and heartfelt lessons about love and acceptance.
At the center of the story is Dike (Mike Ezuronye), a simple, illiterate business man married to glamorous Nollywood star Erica played by (Benita Onyiuke). While Dike loves his wife dearly, his inability to speak polished English or display “industry etiquette” becomes a source of embarrassment for Erica whenever they’re around her sophisticated colleagues, Amanda (Nancy Desmond) and Linda (Amazon Austin).
The tension boils over when Erica hires an English tutor — a flamboyant cross-dresser — to help Dike refine his speech and manners. But Dike, shocked and confused by the tutor’s appearance, chases him out of the house with a belt, sparking a marital rift. Pushed by her friends, Erica leaves Dike, taking refuge with one of them and leaving their only child in his care.
Heartbroken but determined, Dike takes to TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook to tell his side of the story in his unpolished “igbotic” accent. Unexpectedly, his raw charm and authenticity win him a growing fanbase online, turning him into a social media sensation.
As Dike’s popularity rises, Erica discovers a bitter truth — her so-called friends were never looking out for her. Instead, they were jealous of her rapid rise to fame and even plotted to block her from new roles. Realizing her mistake, Erica returns to Dike, who promises to work on himself and finally embrace the idea of an English tutor.
With its perfect blend of culture clash humor, heartfelt romance, and relatable marital lessons, Local Man offers a refreshing take on love in the face of public opinion and personal pride.
Local Man is a laugh-out-loud yet touching story that reminds us that love is about acceptance, growth, and having someone who stands by you — no matter how “local” the world thinks you are.
