Nigerian AR Artist Ife Olowu Debuts First International Solo Exhibition in Ghana

October 19, 2023

Accra, Ghana — Nigerian visual and Augmented Reality (AR) artist, Ifeoluwa Oluwaseun Olowu, captivated Accra this past weekend with his first international solo exhibition, held at Jamestown Coffee Company, located at Plot 7B West Light, Nyaniba Estates, Accra, Ghana.

The two-day showcase, held from October 19–20, 2023, and tagged ARTRIOT, marked a pivotal moment in Olowu’s rising global profile and reaffirmed the growing influence of immersive African contemporary art.

Organised as part of Jamestown Coffee Co’s monthly gallery series — known for spotlighting bold creatives and cultural innovators — ARTRIOT brought Olowu’s immersive works to audiences eager for new artistic experiences. Olowu was invited from Lagos following international media attention for his pioneering blend of painting and AR technology, a fusion that garnered features on CNN, BBC, Reuters, and other major outlets.

The exhibition transformed the space into a vibrant cultural hub, where paintings met digital animation and mobile interaction. Olowu’s works, often described as “Art of the Future,” invited visitors to engage beyond the static canvas. Using smartphone devices, patrons activated hidden layers of motion, sound, and storytelling embedded within the physical pieces — creating a multi-sensory experience that resonated with art lovers and tech enthusiasts alike.

Jamestown Coffee Co’s event space, nestled in the historic enclave of Nyaniba Estates, became a magnet for Accra’s creative community. Crowds poured in to see the works up close, with long queues forming at key moments during the show’s run. The turnout was testament to Olowu’s growing appeal and the expanding interest in Africa’s technology-driven art forms.

Media interest was equally strong. TV3 Ghana produced an in-depth interview with Olowu during the exhibition, broadcast to a national audience. In conversation with the station, Olowu spoke about his artistic journey, the role of technology in contemporary African art, and his vision of art as a bridge between tradition and innovation.

The TV3 feature amplified the show’s reach far beyond the physical venue, engaging viewers across the country.

Visitors to the exhibition described the interplay between analogue and digital elements as “mind-opening” and “reflective of a new era of artistic expression.” Many pointed to how Olowu’s AR integration sparked conversations about the future of art — not only as visual representation but as an interactive experience.

Artist talks and open discussions at the exhibition space allowed Olowu to connect personally with attendees, sharing insights into his process and the cultural narratives behind his works. On both days, Jamestown Coffee Company’s intimate setting buzzed with interaction, photography, and reflective engagement — a sign of art’s power to bring people together.

ARTRIOT was more than a debut; it was a cultural exchange — an invitation for Ghana’s artistic public to experience Lagos-inspired creativity through a new lens. As the show closed, many attendees expressed hope that Jamestown Coffee Co would continue hosting similar futuristic exhibitions, helping to position Accra as a hub for contemporary and tech-infused art in West Africa.

For Olowu, the success of his Accra exhibition reinforces his belief in art’s capacity to transcend borders and mediums. By merging heritage, innovation, and immersive storytelling, he continues to expand the dialogue around what contemporary African art can be — firmly rooted in context yet boldly progressive in vision.
