OG Mage Unveils Alter Ego: A Six-Track EP Featuring Standout Performances from TMJ, Diyo Matalo and OLUWAFEMI
By Shalom Ogu
Released in 2021, Alter Ego by OG Mage is a six-track project that explores ambition, reflection, and personal evolution. While the EP is clearly OG Mage’s creative vision, the presence of TMJ (Tomide Joseph) across three tracks gives the project an added emotional weight. His vocal tone and songwriting maturity bring a sense of depth that quietly shapes some of the EP’s most memorable moments.
The project opens with “B.D.D.” (Billion Dollar Dream), where OG Mage lays the foundation for the EP’s aspirational tone. TMJ’s hook stands out immediately; it carries the kind of hunger and conviction that makes a listener pause for a second before the next verse even begins. There is a familiar sense of ambition in the delivery, reminiscent of the emotional clarity artists like Praiz brought into Nigerian contemporary music, yet TMJ still manages to keep the performance distinctly his own.
On “Down This Road,” the collaboration between OG Mage and TMJ becomes more introspective. OG Mage leans into reflective lyricism while TMJ’s vocals provide the emotional balance that keeps the track grounded. His delivery feels measured and thoughtful, almost like the voice guiding the narrative forward. It is the kind of feature that does not overpower the record but quietly strengthens its core.
The third collaboration, “On My Way,” features both TMJ and Diyo Matalo alongside OG Mage. The song carries themes of perseverance and steady progress. TMJ’s contribution sits comfortably between OG Mage’s verses and Diyo Matalo’s presence, giving the record a smooth continuity. His vocal control adds a layer of urgency that keeps the momentum of the track moving.
Outside of TMJ’s appearances, the EP still maintains its individuality. “Owe Dem Money” showcases OG Mage in a more direct and assertive mode, leaning into themes of accountability and survival. It is one of the project’s more straightforward records, providing a contrast to the collaborative tracks.
On “Too Blessed,” OG Mage teams up with OLUWAF3MI, delivering a celebratory record that shifts the energy of the EP toward gratitude and confidence. The chemistry between the two artists adds a different dynamic to the project, highlighting OG Mage’s ability to build strong collaborations.
The closing track, “A Piece of Lovely Cake,” offers a softer, reflective moment that rounds off the EP with a sense of calm resolution.
Across Alter Ego, every song carries its own personality; however, TMJ’s presence across three tracks gives the project an emotional anchor. His vocal maturity and storytelling instincts complement OG Mage’s vision in a way that feels natural rather than forced. It is a reminder that sometimes the right feature does not just add to a song; it quietly elevates the entire project.
