Olympic-bound Aruna, Oshonaike Adopted

As efforts to guarantee podium performance of Team Nigeria at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics gathers momentum, two of Nigeira’s top table tennis players – Aruna Quadri and Funke Oshonaike were yesterday in Lagos adopted by the SIFAX group.
The announcement came after a meeting with the Chairman of the Sifax Group and the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Mr Sunday Dare.
Two members of Team Nigeria, Funke Oshonaike and Aruna Quadri, were adopted under the Adopt-an-Athlete initiative of the Ministry, by Sifax Group.
The two athletes were adopted to support their preparations towards the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
With the adoption of the two elite athletes, the total number of Team Nigeria athletes adopted under the Adoption initiative of FMYSD, has risen to 18.
Nigeria first participated in the Olympic Games in 1952, and has sent athletes to compete in every Summer Olympic Games since then, except for the boycotted 1976 Summer Olympics.
The country has won a total of 25 medals at the Games made up of three gold, 10 bronze and 12 silver medals.
Nigeria recorded her best performance at the XXVI edition of the Games held in 1996 in Atlanta, Georgia, winning two gold medals viz Chioma Ajunwa and the men’s football team; one silver medal by the women’s 4x400m relay team of Bisi Afolabi, Fatimah Yusuf, Charity Opara and Falilat Ogunkoya and three bronze medals won by Mary Onyali (200m), Falilat Ogunkoya (400m) and Duncan Dokiwari ( Men’s Super Heavyweight in Boxing).
