Police Declare Youths Wanted for Organising Gay Sex Party
By Ifeanyi Chukwu
The Nigerian Police, Lagos State Command, have declared one Mr. Uzoma Jude Agoh, John Jay, and others wanted for alleged crime related to homosexuality.
Agoh, Jay and others still at large were among those involved in a gay sex party held in Lekki, Lagos. Some of them were caught red-handed in a same-sex act at the party, a crime against Federal Republic of Nigeria criminal code act, which states that any person who has carnal knowledge of any person against the order of nature is liable for 14 years imprisonment, while attempted homosexual activity is punishable with seven years’ imprisonment. Also, supporting gay or lesbians activities, club or programme is punishable with ten years imprisonment, according to the law.
In a statement signed by the Lagos State, Police Command which declared the suspect wanted on behalf of the Inspector General of Police (IG), the state Police Commissioner added that all well-meaning Nigerians who have information about their whereabouts should alert the police immediately as well as the state government, and that such patriotic Nigerian would be rewarded handsomely.
The police statement noted that Agoh, who had been a sexual partner with Jay, according to investigation, was born on May 15, 1990, and hails from Obohia, in Ahiazu Local Government Area of Imo State.
The statement alleged that he and other accomplices have long been involved in the same-sex act for a long time.
According to the statement, “Homosexuality is highly prohibited in Nigeria mostly in traditional communities where deities are still being worshiped. Same-sex act in Nigeria is illegal. The law of the country imposes 14 years imprisonment for anyone involved in homosexuality. There are no gay rights in the country, as well as many other African countries.”
Their community also vowed that after the police have apprehended them, a cleansing would be carried out, adding that while the police prosecute them according to the Same-sex Act provision in the constitution, they will be expelled from the community “for committing such sacrilege against the gods of the land. They will be prosecuted according to the law of Nigeria, while we will do the traditional rite. They cannot escape it,” his community elders stated.
When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bala Elkana, confirmed the incident, saying they have set machinery in place to apprehend the fleeing gay men, “who will be investigated and treated according to the law of the land.”
The state Police Command in a statement made available to journalists on behalf of the state Police Commissioner, Zubairu Muazu, at the police headquarters in Ikeja, the state capital, by the PPRO, said the incident was reported by the residents of the area, explaining that some of the suspects were caught in the act, “knowing that it is a crime to do so in our society. They will be prosecuted according to the law.”
He said: “The state Police Command has declared some youths in Lekki area of Lagos wanted. Any person or group of persons with useful and actionable information as to the whereabouts of the wanted persons should report to the nearest police station in the state.”
However, when journalists visited Agoh’s mother, Mrs. Theresa Agoh, she expressed shock that their family couldn’t believe that he was among those involved in such an ‘abominable’ act, lamenting that although he was abused sexually when he was a teenager, but that after travelling out of the country, they thought he might have gotten rid of such hideous act. She, however, added that her son is an easy-going man who could not hurt a fly, let alone getting involved in a crime against God, man and the law.
