Former Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, has been arrested  by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Emefiele is currently being detained at the EFCC Headquarters in Abuja. He was picked up by  operatives of the commission hours after his release by the Department of State Services (DSS).

A dependable source confirmed that Emefiele was presently with the EFCC.

“He is in EFCC. The EFCC has the mandate to investigate economic and financial crimes. The DSS does not have that mandate. So he’s here, he’s undergoing interrogation”, the source said.

Spokesman of EFCC, Dele Oyewale, was yet to respond to a query on the subject  as at the time of filing this report..

Emefiele was arrested and detained by the DSS in June after his suspension by President Bola Tinubu

He was on July 25 arraigned on a two-count charge bordering on “illegal possession” of firearms at a Federal High Court in Lagos and was granted bail in the sum of N20 million.

The two-count charge was later struck out on August 17 after the federal government withdrew the charge.

A fresh 20-count charge was later instituted against him over an alleged conspiracy to carry out procurement fraud, among others.

The arraignment was stalled twice.

However, on September 22, the CBN officially confirmed Emefiele’s resignation after Olayemi Cardoso was appointed as substantive governor of the apex bank.
