Sightsavers and the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD), have called on federal government to come up with modalities for making the design and implementation of poverty alleviation programs suitable to the needs of persons with disabilities (PWD)
This is as they equally, stressed the need for registration procedures for the various National Social Investment Programs (NSIP) and the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) programs should be adapted to capture disability status of applicants.
Speaking at a One- day conference tagged, “Equal World Summit,’ hosted by Sightsavers for PWD in Lagos, Country Advocacy Coordinator, Sightsavers, Nigeria, Esther Bature, said Nigeria and world leaders should ensure that the voices of those with disabilities are heard at UN Summit slated for September 18 to 19.
According to her, “In Sept 2015, UN member states, including Nigeria joined together to adopt the sustainable development goals. However, as we now reach the halfway point to the 2030 deadline, progress has derailed and the sustainable development goals (SDGs) are off track.
“In line with our commitment that no one is left behind irrespective of disability, gender, or race, we are holding this consultation forum to ensure that the voices of persons with disability are heard and this should be amplified at the summit.”
