Man Utd Target Onana as Replacement for De Gea

Manchester United “will rival Chelsea as they look to bring in Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana.”

The Cameroon international was an important player at the San Siro last season, playing 41 games across all competitions as Inter finished third in Serie A, won the Coppa Italia and reached the Champions League final.

New Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino is keen on bringing in a new number one and sees Onana as a good option.

The Blues were believed to be in talks that would see Romelu Lukaku return for another loan spell at Inter alongside Kalidou Koulibaly, with Onana moving the other way.

It seems they will now be rivalled by another English side, though, with the Guardian reporting that United are considering Onana as a a ‘challenger to David de Gea.’

The Spaniard is among the Red Devils’ longest serving players and one of the few remaining who won the Premier League at Old Trafford, but his performances last season were inconsistent.

He kept the most clean sheets in the league but was at fault for key goals in the FA Cup final and Europa League quarter final.

There is thought to be a contract on the table for de Gea but he is yet to sign, and the 32-year-old would likely take a significant wage cut and play a reduced role in the side if he did stay in Manchester.

United have been linked with Porto’s highly-rated stopper Diogo Costa, although he seems keen to stay in his native Portugal.

If they can persuade Onana to join Old Trafford, it will be a welcome success after a frustrating few days in the transfer market.

Erik ten Hag’s side recently had a £40m bid for Mason Mount rejected by Chelsea, and are now considered unlikely to bring in Harry Kane to solve their striker problems.
