Ossy Brown Talks Evolving As An Artist, Owning His Label, Signing Juvy Jakes And Lakhid

Born in Nigerian and based in the UK, Ossy Brown is an eclectic artist, performer extraordinaire, prolific songwriter, music business consultant, and multi-executive producer, with vast experience in the media and entertainment space spanning up to a decade. He is the founder and head honcho of Crystalcity Entertainment which also houses his record label, Crystalcity Records.

In this interview, Ossy Brown discusses evolving as an independent artist, owning his own entertainment company & record label, and Signing Juvy Jakes and Lakhid.

How did your musical Journey start?

Just like it is for most creatives where music begins as a hobby, interest or passion then develops into a craft before a career kicks off, it wasn’t any different for me. However, I was quick to see the gold and embraced the brilliance in what I was doing hence began to build a structure to it from the very early stage. I started out my music career as an independent artist and as much as I was excited about the creative aspect, I also paid attention to the business aspect. As a true creative, money wasn’t my motivation but spending over 90 percent of all I had at the time required a level of personal accountability.

At what point in the process of evolving beyond just an artist did the consciousness arise?

The moment I realized as an independent artist I was effectively taking up the responsibilities of a record label/management including executively producing records and concerts. I decided not to keep coasting but rather establish a structure hence the birth of my company, Crystalcity Entertainment under which I publish my music.

Could you share with us your experiences so far, Managing your own company and how it has redefined you?

Being in the forefront of the backend of my craft has been quite interesting as it helped me separate myself from my artistry. Also, this allowed me to actively explore several facets of my giftings which led to becoming other things on the flip side including a commercial photographer/filmmaker.

I have been the main talent and face of the company since its inception and really proud of the successes we’ve achieved over the years. It’s been a rollercoaster of learning and unlearning with every new endeavor and challenge and through this journey, I was certain that I would be doing this for other artists at some point in my career and that time is now.

Do you have any signings yet under Crystalcity Entertainment?

I recently signed two artistes: Lakhid and Juvy Jakes. Lakhid is an Afro/Pop-Soul Sensation with irresistible melodies while Juvy Jakes is a multilingual singer/rapper with lyrical depth. You can learn more about them on our website: www.crystalcityrecords.com. I’m very optimistic that they’re the next big things to happen to the music industry.

Will the workload that comes with signing these new talents as the label’s head honcho and executive producer put a pause on your music career as an artist?

Opposing popular opinion, signing artists won’t stop me from making my own music. As a matter of fact, it feels like I have only just begun. I’m quite confident in the very unique structure we’ve built and operating under which would be able to accommodate more artistes from around the globe in the nearest future. In the meantime, we’re working with talents based in Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
