The Lagos State Government on Wednesday, shut down Babs Fafunwa Millennium School, Ojodu, popularly known as Ojodu Grammar School, until January 2022.

The closure of the school is coming after an accident that occurred at about 2.15pm on Tuesday.

A DAF truck with registration number P 438 YA rammed into a crowd of students, killing some and injuring others.

Although there are reports that up to 15 students lost their lives in the accident, the Lagos State Police authorities confirmed that two students died in the crash.

Police Public Relationship Officer, Adekunle Ajisebutu, had said in a statement that angry students, who were later joined by hoodlums, attempted to set ablaze Ojodu Police station for allegedly shielding the driver of the ill-fated truck.

The Lagos State Government while sympathising with parents and students over the accident confirmed that two students died on the spot while the remaining 12 students, 7 females and five males are recuperating having sustained varying degrees of injuries.

The Government also confirmed that some students who had slight injuries have been discharged.

The Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo who visited the Babs Fafunwa Millennium Senior Grammar School, Ojodu, described the incident as quite unfortunate and devastating.

She also visited the medical centers where the students were being treated.

Already, arrangements are being made for trauma counseling sessions for students and teachers in person and via helplines.

According to Mrs. Adefisayo, “we are working with professional counselors and trauma experts to support us in helping students and teachers pass through this challenging time.”

She said the state government will be responsible for the medical expenses of the affected students.

Other officials of the state who have also visited the students at the various health centers, include the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mr. Abayomi Abolaji, Directors of the Ministry, District, Quality Assurance officials and school management.
