FIFA, CAF Postpone Guinea v Morocco Due to Coup in Conakry

The political situation in Guinea which has seen the army arresting the country’s president leading to political upheaval, both FIFA and CAF have announced the postponement of the World Cup qualifying match between Guinea and Morocco which was initially slated for Monday (today) September 6.

According to the statement issued by FIFA, “the current political and security situation in Guinea is quite volatile and is being closely monitored by FIFA and CAF.

“To ensure the safety and security of all players and to protect all match officials, FIFA and CAF have decided to postpone the FIFA World Cup 2022 qualifying match Guinea vs. Morocco, which had scheduled to be hosted in Conakry, Guinea, on Monday 6 September. Rescheduling information will be made available at a later date,” concludes the statement.

Meanwhile, Moroccan players and Cameroonian match officials trapped in Conakry as a result of the coup that ousted President Alpha Conde from power have been allowed to fly out of the capital city.

Guinean journalist Cellou Diallo has told BBC Sport Africa that Morocco have received clearance from their embassy to travel to the airport, where the Moroccan federation’s plane was ready to evacuate the players.

Both the Morocco delegation, as well as the Cameroonian match officials, have been allocated an escort to the airport, he added.

“Guinea’s borders are currently closed, but the Moroccans and match officials have been given special authorisation to leave,” Diallo, who often reports for Canal+, added.

Morocco’s national team was trapped in Guinea, where they were set to play a World Cup qualifier today, after an attempted coup took place in the capital Conakry on Sunday.

The Moroccan team is captained by Wolves defender Roman Saiss and also includes QPR striker Ilias Chair and Watford duo Adam Masina and Imran Louza.
