600 artists. 100 performances. 20 different venues. That’s the treat awaiting theatre buffs this season as the 2019 edition of the Lagos Theatre Festival berths on Monday April 8. The festival, which is in its sixth year was postponed on short notice as the general elections calendar in Nigeria disrupted the initial dates of the theatrical tradition in the mega city.
As usual, 19 unconventional satellite venues will hold different shows simultaneously with the main venue, Freedom Park. From residential to abandoned properties, directors are set to show the audience that all the world is a stage.
Launched in 2013 by the British Council in response to the need to provide the platform for theatre makers in Nigeria, to develop audiences for the theatre productions and to produce theatre works for unconventional spaces, the LTF is a cultural staple that embraces other art forms such as performance poetry, music, dance amongst others.
International performers who are masters of soliloquy had added a rich spice to the theatrical treat in previous editions.Hopefully, this edition with the theme, “Imagine the Unimaginable” will parade very exotic performances, creative set designs, excellent artistry and mouth-watering spectacle within the limited budget.
