The Katsina State Chairman of the Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEC), Alhaji Lawal Buhari, has called on parents, particularly the womenfolk and well-to-do-individuals in the society to encourage girl child education in Nigeria.
Buhari disclosed this while monitoring the two-day training of mothers’ association in Batsari Local Government Area, among the three local government areas organised by a non-governmental organisation, G4G, in collaboration with the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) on Tuesday.
He said parents should avail their children especially female ones to acquire formal education, reaffirming that both boys and girls have equal rights to education as one of the most significant stage of their lives.
According to him, “Education is a right of every child and best reason a child can grow up to be fully independent and empowered.
“Parents should ensure their children who were not in school go to school especially the girl child who was at disadvantage. You should embrace the sprit of ensuring that our children enrol in schools.”
Buhari, represented by the Director Planning, Research and Statistics of the Board, Alhaji Isah Musa, reiterated that it is the right of parents to provide basic education for their children.
The chairman then implored them to continue to cooperate and support the programmes and policies of the state government especially in its efforts at restoring the lost glory of the education sector.
Earlier, the Desk Officer of the programme, Hajiya Maijidda Kaikai, revealed that 1,250 women were participating in the training in 50 schools across the three focus local government areas of Batsari, Kankia and Kankara.
She said that the training was aimed at showcasing the importance of girls’ education, especially on enrollment, retention, completion and transition.
