The Sokoto State Government has approved N240 million for the construction of 100 units of affordable houses for low income earners in the state.
The state Commissioner for Land and Housing, Alhaji Bello Guiwa, made this known shortly after the State Executive Council meeting at the Government House, Sokoto on Thursday.
He said the construction of the houses would be carried out by the Sokoto Housing Corporation through direct labour.
According to him, the project would be executed at the old Bado area of Sokoto metropolis.
The commissioner emphasised that the project was aimed at providing cheap houses for low income earners in the state.
“The construction of the 100 housing units is meant for very low income earners who cannot afford to build their own houses.
“The present administration deemed it necessary to provide such affordable houses in order to improve their living conditions,” he said.
Guiwa disclosed that the state government also approved the sale of government quarters to non indigenes occupying them.
He stated that the non indigenes occupying government quarters had been given six months to pay the down payment for the houses.
Also speaking, the state Commissioner for Higher Education, Dr. Muhammad Jabbi Kilgori, said the Council also approved the construction of an e-library for the Sokoto State University.
He stated that the contract was awarded to Messrs Lachaso Engineering System Ltd at the cost of N158 million with a four-month completion period.
Kilgori added that the construction of the automated library would enable the university to meet up with the accreditation requirements of the National University Commission (NUC).
