Buhari: Nigeria Has No Regret Fighting Appartheid

President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday in Abuja, said Nigeria had no cause to regret its fight against the scourge of apartheid in South Africa before the advent of full democratic system in the country.

In a statement, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, said Buhari made the remark while receiving the outgoing South African High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Lulu Louis Mnguni, in the State House.

According to the statement, Buhari said Nigeria made lots of sacrifices during the years of apartheid to ensure that full rights were restored to all citizens, irrespective of the colour of their skin, promising that Nigeria would continue to strengthen its historic and fraternal relationship with South Africa. 

It added that the president who congratulated Mnguni on the successful completion of his duty tour, also noted that bilateral relations between Nigeria and South Africa would be improved upon, especially in the area of trade where he said both countries had areas of competitive advantage.

The statement further stated that the outgoing envoy, in his remark, expressed gratitude to the federal government for all the support he received during the course of his assignment, pointing out that the relationship between both countries had a long history of brotherliness and partnership in promoting the African course and disclosed that he would return to South Africa with fond memories of Nigeria.
