The Senate wednesday passed through second reading a bill seeking the establishment of the Federal Polytechnic in Silame, Sokoto State, to ensure more access to higher technical education in the region.
The bill is sponsored by Senator Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto APC), who lamented that a large number of qualified candidates are stranded annually in their failed attempt to gain admission into higher institutions in the North-west region.
Wamakko while presenting the lead debate, said Nigeria’s developing economy has high potential which require high level technical, scientific and administrative skills to drive it.
He added that the polytechnic would further advance knowledge through research and nurture unique innovations, entrepreneurship and wealth management in core areas of interest.
“The economic development and progress of any nation depends to a large extent on the technological advancement. The technology sub-sector plays a major role in the economic development and progress of any nation. It is one of the indicators for measuring national growth or the level of development of any nation,†Wamakko said.
