As a result of the slow pace in the implementation of the new water law that would see to the transition of the state water board into a self-sustaining corporation, Bauchi State may lose a $60 million five-year USAID Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) intervention project targeting five states across the country expected to take off next year
This was revealed Thursday in Bauchi by the Chief of Party (CoP) of USAID funded WASH Coordination Project (WCP), Mr. Timeyin Uwejamomere, during a three-day Agenda Setting Retreat for Coordinated WASH services.
The CoP, who commended Governor Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar for his commitment in the USAID WCP, however wondered why, after the executive approval given to relevant state MDAs for the transition of water board to a corporation, the implementation process is going at a snail speed, a situation he described as “taking the implementation process backwardâ€.
Earlier in a presentation highlighting the overview of the WASH Coordination Project (WCP) in Bauchi, Uwejamomere said WCP has three main objectives which include: “WASH programming based on data and information generated or gathered, sustaining the tempo established under the USAID/Nigeria SUWASA activity until a new and more comprehensive USAID programme is in place and to provide support to new reform-minded state governments for the immediate term until full programmes are in place.”
He further said that the WCP is a 24-month intervention for Bauchi and Kaduna States that “is designed to achieve the dual benefits of improved health and well-being for Nigerians through increased and more financially sustainable access to water supply, sanitation and hygiene services”.
