Ferrari is reportedly developing a hardcore 488 GTO, set to take on the upcoming Porsche 911 GT2.
Autocar reports the Ferrari 488 GTO will launch next year and serve as a track-focused version of the 488 GTB. It’s basically a replacement for the Ferrari 458 Speciale and will retain the 3.9-liter twin-turbo V8 engine found in the 488 GTB.
But the engine’s output certainly won’t stay the same. Performance will be boosted to around 700 horsepower and plenty of interior components will be removed, such as sound deadening in the engine bay to help reduce weight. Other lightweight upgrades include thinner glass for the windshield and side windows, lighter ceramic brakes and forged wheels.
That means curb weight should be under 3,086 pounds (1,400 kilograms), allowing it to go zero-to-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in a little more than 2.7 seconds.
Look for more aggressive bodywork to improve aerodynamics, while new software for the Side Slip Angle Control will make the 488 GTO even more ready for the track.
It’s now believed that recent spy photos of a 488 GTB, testing with camouflage is actually a prototype for the 488 GTO, rather than a mule for a new Ferrari Dino. For now, we’ll just have to wait patiently for Ferrari to confirm the 488 GTO’s development.
