RANDOM THOTS

Security is a big issue all over the world. As an important component of development, security should not be trifled with. Keeping insecurity at bay and keeping citizens and properties safe is the primary duty of law enforcement agencies globally. In line with this, smart developed nations place high premium on efficient security organisations composed of highly disciplined personnel.

On Good Friday public holiday last week, the Maryland intersection in Lagos was very busy in the evening. Right in the middle of the intersection THISDAY espied a Police patrol vehicle parked not too far away from the mobile shelter, under which were clustered some Police officers, apparently on security watch.

A cursory glance may reveal nothing, but those police officers were having a swell time in full public glare, furtively collecting and swilling some alcoholic drinks distributed by a female officer who was clutching a black polythene bag. Having fun on a popular public holiday is basic, but when this same set of security officers – both male and female – who hold the lives of the general populace in their hands, are seen cuddling bottles of Guinness stout, then there is a cause for worry.

Maintaining strict vigilance to catch wayward criminals hanging around stationary motorists takes a lot of concentration. But when those tasked with protecting Lagos residents become inebriated while on duty, who then takes care of policing and security? If those monitoring squads and IG task forces can carry breathalyzers along when making their random rounds, there would be a definite reduction in cases of accidental discharge and resultant casualties in the metropolis and Nigeria in general. A drunken policeman or policewoman cannot secure anyone from harm or danger….just saying
