In spite of the controversy trailing the proposition of immunity for principal officers of both federal and state legislatures, the Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Hon. Kola Oluwawole, has backed the proposition, saying it would help in stabilizing the
country’s democracy and check unnecessary distractions .
The bill , which would exclude principal officers from civil and criminal prosecution while in their respective offices, has passed the second reading in both chambers of the National Assembly.
If the bill scales the hurdles, it will cover the Senate President Deputy, Speaker, House of Representatives and some principal officers of both chambers as well as the Speakers and their deputies in the 36 states ‘ houses of assembly.
In his reaction to the debate over the desirability or not of protection from prosecution for serving lawmakers on Thursday , Oluwawole said the legislature, “at the national and state levels, needs to be cautious about this matter. Anything that has become law in the nation must be followed.
“If that is what the people, as represented by the lawmakers, want, then, it should be.
“I think immunity for the president, vice-president, governor and deputy governor is enough for our democracy. For them, being the main nchor of governance, there is no need for unnecessary political distraction while in power.”
