AMCE Achieves LEED Silver Certification, Reinforcing Commitment to Sustainable, World-Class Healthcare in Africa

The African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE), Abuja, has achieved Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification under the Building Design and Construction (BD+C) programme, marking an important milestone in its commitment to sustainable infrastructure, operational efficiency and world-class healthcare delivery.
Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), LEED is a globally recognised green building certification system that assesses building performance across areas including energy and water efficiency, indoor environmental quality, materials and environmental impact. For AMCE, the achievement extends beyond environmental sustainability, recognising the importance of infrastructure that supports patient and staff well-being, efficient operations and the long-term delivery of specialised healthcare.
Brian Deaver, Chief Executive Officer of AMCE, said the certification reflects the Centre’s commitment to building a world-class healthcare institution with sustainability, operational excellence and patient-centred care at its core. “We recognise that delivering exceptional healthcare goes beyond clinical expertise and advanced medical technology; it also requires infrastructure that supports efficiency, resilience and the well-being of patients, staff and visitors. This achievement reinforces our ambition to set new benchmarks for specialised healthcare in Africa, while ensuring that the way we build and operate contributes to long-term institutional value,” he said.

Building a better environment for patient care

LEED incorporates considerations such as indoor air quality, lighting and thermal comfort, which are relevant to healthcare environments where patients, clinicians and visitors spend extended periods. For AMCE, the certification reinforces an approach to building design that considers human well-being alongside environmental performance, providing a foundation for a comfortable and supportive healthcare environment.

Isaac Owusu Adjakwah, Director, Facilities & Estate Management at AMCE, said the certification recognises the importance of integrating sustainability and resource efficiency into the design and construction of the Centre’s facilities. “For a specialised healthcare institution like AMCE, the performance of our buildings and supporting infrastructure is critical to reliable service delivery. Our focus is to build on this achievement through effective facilities management, responsible energy and water use, regular performance monitoring and continuous improvement. This will be essential to translating the principles behind the certification into sustained operational benefits for the Centre and the people who depend on our services,” he said.
Supporting operational efficiency and long-term value
Healthcare facilities depend on energy-intensive systems, specialised equipment and reliable building services. LEED promotes energy- and water-efficient design, providing a foundation for responsible resource management and improved operational efficiency. For AMCE, effective facilities management and continuous performance monitoring will be essential to translating these design principles into measurable operational improvements, including opportunities to manage utility costs and optimise building systems. The certification also strengthens AMCE’s sustainability credentials and supports its engagement with healthcare partners, investors, government stakeholders and other institutions increasingly focused on environmental, social and governance (ESG) priorities.
Sustaining the commitment
Maintaining the benefits of sustainable design requires ongoing investment in facilities management, monitoring and continuous improvement. AMCE will continue to focus on the responsible management of its infrastructure to support service quality, operational efficiency and institutional sustainability. As the Centre advances specialised healthcare, research, education and innovation, its LEED Silver certification reinforces its ambition to contribute to a more sustainable future for healthcare in Africa.
