Popular Nigerian craftsman and entrepreneur, Moses Amiebenomo, popularly known as the “Celebrity Carpenter,” has threatened legal action against individuals and online platforms he accused of publishing, republishing or amplifying what he described as false and defamatory claims about him.

In a public notice issued through his legal representatives, Amiebenomo said he had resolved to pursue appropriate legal remedies against bloggers, influencers, commentators and other third parties over publications concerning him in the past year.

He also called on those responsible for the alleged publications to remove posts, videos, commentaries and other materials containing statements he considers defamatory.

According to the notice, the proposed legal action followed the circulation and amplification of allegations concerning him, which he claimed had been published by third parties without adequate verification or lawful justification.

Amiebenomo said the circumstances surrounding some of the allegations had made it difficult for him to respond publicly, particularly where they involved the mother of his children.

“As a man, when allegations, defamatory statements, or false narratives are circulated against you by the mother of your children, there are limits to how you may respond, both legally and morally because of the children involved,” he stated.

He, however, said such considerations should not extend to third parties who knowingly publish, republish, endorse or promote statements that are ultimately established to be false and defamatory.

The notice further warned that the use of qualifiers such as “allegedly,” “reportedly” or “according to sources” would not necessarily protect a publisher if it was subsequently established that the material was false and defamatory and had been published knowingly or recklessly.

Amiebenomo gave the individuals and platforms concerned seven days to comply with the notice, failing which, he said, his legal team would pursue remedies available under applicable law.

He said such remedies could include civil claims for defamation and other legal actions where applicable.

The craftsman added that the notice was issued without prejudice to any rights or remedies available to him in relation to existing or future publications.

The threatened legal action comes amid growing concerns over the rapid circulation of unverified allegations and personal disputes on social media, where original publications can be quickly republished and amplified across multiple platforms.
